Last U.S. Jet Leaves Kabul, Ending 20 Year Military Presence

The last United States jet flew out of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, complying with the 31st August deadline agreed with the Taliban. General Kenneth McKenzie Jr. described the group as "very helpful" regarding the winding down of the evacuation procedure. He said that the Taliban assisted in creating “a front perimeter outside of the airfield to prevent people from coming on the airfield during our departure" but did not know its exact timing.

The security situation is far from normal with the US withdrawal closing the curtains on a 20-year old military presence that saw almost all its gains disappear. Gen. McKenzie Jr. said that around 2,000 ISIS fighters are active in Afghanistan that will prove to be hostile to their regime. He also added that "While the voluntary evacuation is complete, the diplomatic mission to ensure additional US citizens and eligible Afghans who want to leave continues"
