Malaysia Political Crisis Develops Amid Calls for PM’s Resignation

Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin faces protests from citizens and Opposition lawmakers as the chorus for his resignation grows louder. The PM claimed today that he has the required support of the majority of the country’s 222 legislators to continue in his position.

United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), an important coalition partner in Muhyidin’s ruling Perikatan Nasional government, has threatened once again to pull support from the premier.

While Muhyiddin claims that his legitimacy will be assured by a confidence motion in September, critics have pointed out his misuse of emergency powers deployed to suspend parliament and prevent opposition gatherings against him. The stalemate and politicking are also affecting the nation’s COVID response, which added 17,150 cases to its total case count of 11.6 Lakh, a number steadily rising since the end of June.

Former PM Mahathir Mohamad and Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim have called for Parliament to convene urgently so that the no-confidence motion against the PM may be moved and the deadlock resolved.
