#MeToo: Delhi Court Acquits Priya Ramani In Criminal Defamation Case By MJ Akbar

Noting that a woman has the right to put her grievance even after decades, the Delhi court on Wednesday acquitted journalist Priya Ramani in the criminal defamation case filed by former union minister M J Akbar.

During the #MeToo movement, Ramani had in 2018 alleged sexual misconduct by the former editor in December 1993, forcing Akbar to resign as minister in October 2018.

In its verdict, the court observed that “sexual abuse takes away dignity and self-confidence” and that “even a man of social status can be a sexual harasser”.

“Right of reputation can't be protected at the cost of right to dignity,” it said.
