Myanmar Charges Jailed US Journalist, Could Stay Imprisoned For Life

Danny Fenster is an American journalist who was arrested in Myanmar on May as he was leaving the country amid the worsening situation caused by the military coup that saw the powerful military junta wrest power from the fledgling civilian government.

He has been charged with two new charges of ‘terrorism’ and ‘sedition’ which could send him to jail for life. He has been charged under the Counter-Terrorism Act and Myanmar’s Penal Code as stated by his lawyer Than Zaw Aung.

Fernster is facing three earlier cases which are proceeding at a different court in Yangon for contacts with terrorist organizations, fomenting dissent against the military, unlawful association, and breaching immigration laws.

In a closed trial that is only reported by his lawyer, the journalist at Yangon-based Frontier Myanmar has been reportedly accused of maintaining ties with his former employer Myanmar Now which had allegedly carried out offenses.

More than 1,200 people have been killed following the military coup as the junta steps up its efforts to stamp out dissent.
