Netizens Tickle Funny Bone, Petition Launched to “Stop” Modi ‘Jinxing’ Women’s Team at Olympics

Netizens have taken to social media to react after the Indian Men’s Hockey team lost 5-2 to Belgium in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics 2021. A petition has been created on the website Change.org requesting PM Modi not to watch the Women’s Hockey Team’s semi-final tomorrow (4th August), saying “let’s keep the jinx away”.

A similar petition was launched on the same platform to stop Jeff Bezos from returning to Earth from his ‘space trip’, and went viral. Such petitions and memes comprise a new online medium of protest and disapproval conveyed with ironic humour.

With hyperbolic language such as a request for “jammers” and to “cut cable and electricity supply”, the petition is a satire against the PM that has gathered 500 signatures until now.

Indian Twitter trended with #Panauti on top today, with many users sharing memes poking fun at how the PM’s presence during major milestone events for the nation makes them go wrong.
