North Korea Ballistic Missile Launch Condemned At UN, UNSC Emergency Meeting Called

After it was confirmed on Wednesday that the DPRK (North Korea) has successfully launched ballistic missiles from a submarine, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council was called by the United States and Britain. Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida confirmed that two ballistic missiles launched from north Korea landed in the Sea of Japan.

The ambassadors of various western countries have referred to this test as a provocation. It violates weapons sanctions placed on North Korea by the United Nations. The DPRK has repeatedly stated that it is developing nuclear capabilities to counter a possible US military threat.

However, no new sanctions or joint statements have been adopted by the Security Council. Two of its veto members, China and Russia, chose not to comment after the closed-door meeting concluded.

Geraldine Byrne Nason, Ireland’s ambassador to the council, said that "We firmly condemn this provocative action which constitutes a clear violation of the UN Security Council resolutions”. The US envoy to the UNSC Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that “each new advancement of the DPRK's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs destabilises the region and threatens international peace and security”.
