The explosion occurred when a massive quantity of ammonium nitrate was stored in unsafe conditions for over six years within a dense population area.
Its first anniversary comes amidst a rapid economic collapse in Lebanon, causing acute shortages of fuel, electricity, and essentials. The Human Rights Watch had been critical of the investigation, criticizing “mismanagement and corruption” in its report on the tragedy.
