Phillipines Orders India’s BrahMos Anti-Ship Missile In $374 Million Contract

The Philippines has ordered an anti-ship supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, which is produced by the Indian-Russian joint venture Brahmos Aerospace. The deal is worth $347 million to supply The Philippines’ navy with shore-based anti-ship missiles. This makes Philippines the first export customer of the missile for India.

In a statement on the purchase, Phillipines Defense Secretary, Delfin Lorenzana said: “Negotiated with the Government of India, it includes the delivery of three batteries, training for operators and maintainers as well as the necessary Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package […] Coastal Defense Regiment of the Philippine Marines will be the primary employer of this modern strategic defence capability of the AFP”

The BrahMos missile has been deployed on strategically active locations along the LAC with China in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh as well.

The Philippines had expressed interest In procuring the missile since 2016 and negotiations for acquiring Brahmos Aerospace’s Land-Based Missile System (LBMS) for the Philippines Army began in 2019. On  March 2nd, 2021, a government-to-government deal for defense equipment procurement, and that cleared the way for the present sale.
