 PM Modi At SCO: Afghanistan Crisis Shows Radicalization Danger, Underscores Outreach To “Moderate” Islam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a 6 minute virtual address at the Heads of State Council at the 21st plenary of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), wherehe said that the threat posed by radicalization has been demonstrated in the Afghanistan situation. He also welcomed Iran as a new full member of the SCO.

Modi emphasied the importance of reaching out to “moderate” traditions of Islam as a strategy to counteract the influence of “increasing radicalization”

“Twentieth anniversary of the SCO is the right time to think about the future of SCO. The biggest challenges in this area are related to peace, security and trust deficit and root cause of these problems is increasing radicalisation. Recent developments in Afghanistan have made this challenge clear” the Prime Minister said.

He also said that India is looking to increase its connectivity to Central Asia. He highlighted India’s importance as a “vast market” to the landlocked countries of the region and called for an “innovative spirit” in youth and entrepreneurs to raise India’s stakes in upcoming technologies.
