PML-N's Shehbaz Sharif, PTI's Qureshi File Nomination Papers For PM's Post

Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), nominated himself for prime minister on Sunday, while the previous ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), picked Shah Mehmood Qureshi as its candidate.

The decision occurred only hours after Prime Minister Imran Khan was forced to resign following a no-confidence vote in the House of Parliament early Sunday morning, making him the first prime minister in Pakistan's history to be sent home after losing the House's confidence.

According to the Express Tribune daily, Shehbaz, who is 70 years old, submitted candidacy papers for the next leader of the house before the date set by the National Assembly.

Shehbaz will be endorsed by PML-N senior leaders Khawaja Asif and Rana Tanveer.

Khan's party has selected Shah Mehmood Qureshi, a 65-year-old former foreign minister, to run for Prime Minister.

Aamir Dogar and Ali Muhammad Khan, both members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), will back the party's vice-chairman.

The National Assembly Secretariat has already established the deadlines for filing candidacy papers and scrutinising candidates for prime minister and speaker of the parliament.
