Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Minister candidate for Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, addressed supporters after his victory from Dhuri seat. He was an MP from Sangrur before resigning to contest the Assembly elections. He said that ‘this is a fight to make Punjab Punjab again’, and he addressed the opposition parties who had ‘slandered us, thrown mud at us, made personal comments. Mr. Mann said: “We forgive them, but they will have to learn 2.45 crore Punjabis”.
Pitching the AAP’s professed model of ‘clean governance’, he said that while earlier, the people had to make rounds of government officers waiting for ‘sahabs’ (officials), “now the sahabs will come to your village”, saying in English: “they are public servants, they have to serve the people”.
Bhagwant Mann has also announced that he will take the oath as CM from Khatkarkalan, the birthplace of Bhagat Singh, rather than from Raj Bhawan.
He also took an indirect dig at long-term Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, saying that Punjab was earlier run from ‘palaces with big oors’, hinting at Singh’s ‘royal’ lineage and apparently lavish dwelling. “But from now, Punjab will be run from villages, wards, mohallas (localities), and cities”.
Bhagwant Mann enthused the crowd by listing the names of the Punjab veteran politicains who had lost, including Parkash Singh Badal, Captain Amarinder Singh, Navjot Singh Sidhu, and others, saying that ‘honest intentions always win’. He also assured those that did not vote for the AAP, saying: “In a democracy, everyone has the right to present their side.. I will be the chief minister of all Punjab”
