Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case: Supreme Court Grants Bail To Convict AG Perarivalan

AG Perarivalan, the man accused of assassinating Rajiv Gandhi, was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The Supreme Court was debating whether or not AG Perarivalan should be released on bail.

"Since Perarivalan has already served a term of more than 30 years, we are of the view that he is entitled to bail despite significant resistance from the Additional Solicitor General," the court noted in its judgement, granting AG Perariwala bail.

The Center had objected to the plea, claiming that Perarivalan had already benefited from a commuted death sentence by commuting his death sentence due to a delay in the decision on his mercy appeal, and that he could no longer cite that delay.

In May 1999, Perarivalan, who was caught when he was 19 years old, was condemned to death. He was found guilty of purchasing an 8-volt battery that was used to detonate the belt bomb that assassinated Rajiv Gandhi.

Due to the time, it took for his and two other Sri Lankans, Murugan and Santhan, to file mercy applications, their sentences were converted to life imprisonment in 2014. Soon after, Tamil Nadu's AIADMK administration ordered the release of all seven of the case's defendants.
