The war in Ukraine with Russia has completed two months since it was begun as a “special military operation” by Moscow on February 24th. In an interview with Russian media, Russian foreign minister said that the risk of nuclear war and World War III has become more plausible now. Russia has also communicated to the United States that it should stop its supply of arms to Ukraine to avoid further inflaming the conflict.
Mr. Lavrov said that Russia opposed atomic war and weapons, and had successfully worked to convince present US President Joe Biden to ratify a 1987 statement between the former Soviet Union and the US against nuclear war, with a joint declaration being signed in June 2021 at Geneva with China, France, and the UK.
However, he said that at present, the risk of nuclear war are “very significant. I don't want them artificially inflated. There are many who would wish for it. The danger is serious, real. It cannot be underestimated.”
Lavrov gave the example of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, and said that at that time, there were “channels of communication that both leaders trusted. Now there is no such channel”. He also criticized the term ‘rules-based order’ used by the US and its international allies, saying that it jettisons the concept of international law altogether: “rules are a buzzword the US and its allies use when they are required to behave ‘nicely.”
It also called for de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine and said that NATO is fighting a ‘proxy war’ in Ukraine. It demanded that the US stop supplying arms to Ukraine, which was like “pouring oil into a burning flame”
Ukraine Foreign Minister Says ‘We Are Winning’ After Lavrov’s Remarks
Russia loses last hope to scare the world off supporting Ukraine. Thus the talk of a ‘real’ danger of WWIII. This only means Moscow senses defeat in Ukraine. Therefore, the world must double down on supporting Ukraine so that we prevail and safeguard European and global security.
