Section 144 Imposed In Village Near Roorkee After ‘Hindu Mahapanchayat’ Announced

Authorities have imposed CRPC Section 144 in Dada Jalalpur village near Roorkee, Haridwar district, after it was announced that a ‘Hindu Mahapanchayat’ convened by Hindu religious leaders would ‘discuss’ incidents of stone pelting and violence during a Hanuman Jayanti procession. Similar incidents had occured in other parts of the country, most notably in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri.

33 people associated with the event have been arrested by police in Haridwar. The reason cited is that the event was being held without police permission.

Haridwar was the site of the first of multiple ‘Dharma Sansads’ (religious conclave) organized by religious leaders in December 2021 where calls for violence against Muslims were allegedly given, among other hate speeches. After perceived police laxity, cases were registered and a petition was filed in the Supreme Court.

Yesterday on Tuesday, during a hearing on the same, the apex court warned the Uttarakhand state government that there must not be any hate speeches in an upcoming Dharma Sansad announced in Roorkee.

Just hours before the arrests in Dada Jalalpur village , the Uttarakhand High Court had directed the Chief Secretary of the state to maintain a record of the prevailing atmosphere in the state. The court had been told that there would be no “objectionable statements” made which could lead to “untoward incidents”.

Media reports that a man named Swami Anand Swarup declared that he would hold the ‘Mahapanchayat’ even without police permission. It is being suspected tha members of the core committee of the aforementioned ‘Dhamra Sansads’, like Yatindrananda Giri, Prabhodananda Saraswati, Paramananda Ji maharaj, and others, were involved in organizing it as well.
