The Taliban insurgency gained further ground in Afghanistan after the terrorist group killed a radio station manager and kidnapped a journalist in Helmund. The insurgency also captured three capital cities of Afghanistan’s provinces: Kunduz, Sar-e-Pul, and Taloqan.
Previously, the Taliban had taken Zaranj (Nimroz province) and Sheberghan (Jowzjan province), controlling five provincial capitals and contesting a majority of the country’s territory with the government.
The U.S. Embassy in Afghanisan condemned the continuing attacks: “They demonstrate wanton disregard for the welfare and rights of civilians and will worsen this country’s humanitarian crisis.” While the U.S. has called for “a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire and to engage fully in peace negotiations to end the suffering of the Afghan people”, a Taliban spokesperson has warned American forces not to engage in hostilities.
