Tennis star Leander Paes has joined Mamata Banerjee-headed Trinamool Congress in Goa. This is the first election that the party plans to contest in the state. Paes has become the latest high-profile personality to join the TMC after actor and former Congress member Nafeesa Ali.
Banerjee said that Paes was like her “younger brother” and she had known him since her time as Youth Minister when he was quite young. In turn, Paes said that he had met Mamata Banerjee for the first time when he was 14, and she encouraged and enabled him to pursue his career.

Now that he has retired, he wants to give back to where he came from, and wants to do it under Mamata’s ‘guidance’, the 48-year old former tennis player stated. Paes is widely regarded as one of the most successful doubles tennis players in history, having won eight Davis Cup titles, eight men’s doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slams.
