TV Channels ‘Warned’ By I&B Ministry Against ‘Scandalous’ And ‘Provocative’ News

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued a’strong’ advistory to satellite television channels for ‘sensational’, ‘scandalous’, and ‘provocative’ coverage of the Jahangirpuri communal violence and Russia-Ukraine war.

The ministry cited The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and said that many of its provisions are being violated due to the content of news. Its circular says:

“It has, however, been found that in the recent past several satellite TV channels have carried out coverage of events and incidents in a manner which appears to be unauthentic, misleading, sensational and using socially unacceptable language and remarks, offending good taste and decency, and obscene and defamatory and having communal overtones, all of which appear to be violative of the Programme Code and infringement of the provisions of sub-section (2) of Section 20 of the aforementioned Act. In particular, attention is invited to reporting on Russia-Ukraine conflict, certain incidents in North-West Delhi and of certain news debates.”

The advisory called out certain instances of news coverage on the ongoing war in Russia and Ukraine, including an insinuation that nuclear bombs would soon be used.

The Ministry also said that “unparliamentary language” was being used to refer to communities and religions, with come channels found to be “found to be disrespectful, passing on insulting remarks or giving reference to the different religions or faiths or their founders”

Among the effects of programming that is “aggressive” in terms of tone and tonality, the ‘subliminal’ and ‘psychological’ effect on children was also included in the advisory.
