West Bengal’s finance minister (independent charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya presented its Budget for the financial year 2022-23 with a total outlay of ₹3.21 Lakh Crore even as the opposition BJP walked out of the assembly, a day after interrupting CM Mamata Banerjee’s speech with “Modi Modi”, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Shri Ram” slogans for close to 40 minutes, to which Ms. Banerjee replied with “Jai Bangla”.

Similarly, on Monday, the first day of the Budget session, West Bengal Governor had to leave his speech unfinished as soon as it started since he was interrupted by sloganeering from BJP MLAs.

The revenue receipts for the state budget are expected at ₹1.98 lakh crore (₹1,98,047) and the public debt will be raised to ₹1.14 lakh crore (₹1,14,958). Capital expenditure is estimated to be ₹33,144 crore, and revenue expenditure is estimated at ₹2.26 lakh crore (₹ 2,26,326).

The Mamata Banerjee-led government has suspended all payments until the passage of the Budget for the 2022-23 fiscal year. A one-line notification issued on Monday, March 7th, the first day of the Budget session read as follows: “Pay bill generation for March, 2022 is temporarily suspended till the Finance Budget 2022-23 of the Government of West Bengal"
