Zelenskyy Welcomes U.S. Move To Ban Russian Oil Imports, Echoes Biden's Remarks

Ukraine’s President  Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to US President Joe Biden’s announcement that the United States will impose an embargo on Russian oil imports, and echoed Biden’s statement that the move will ensure that America “no longer subsidizes Putin’s war machine”. Zelenskyy said that he “thankful” for the U.S. decision “striking at the heart of Putin’s war machine and banning oil, gas and coal from US market”.

Ukraine and Russia are in an ongoing conflict over the former’s NATO membership, which Russia considers a “red line”, and the alleged rights violations in its eastern Donbass regions with a majority of Russian speakers since 2014. Zelenskyy stated yesterday that he had “cooled don” on the idea of Ukraine joining NATO since the alliance had shown it was not ready to confront Russia. He had similarly expressed disappointment at the alliance’s refusal to provide war planes to Ukraine after Russia’s warning that such an act would be considered as aggression against it.

In a White House statement yesterday, Biden wrote that while the United States is self-sufficient in oil, ‘European partners’ are not, and therefore, “we’re working closely with Europe and our partners to develop a long-term strategy to reduce their dependence on Russian energy as well.”
