23rd Round Of India-China Border Talks Conclude

The foreign ministries of India and China concluded the 23rd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) today on 18th November. The key focus of the meeting was to carry the process of disengagement of friction points along the LAC’s western sector between the two sides.

The progress of the last Commander-level meeting held on October 10th was reviewed and there was a “candid and in-depth” discussion on outstanding issues. The two sides sought an “early resolution” of the remaining issues on the LAC’s eastern sector in Ladakh “while fully abiding by bilateral agreements and protocols”.

The two sides will prepare for the next round of the Senior Commander-level meeting to achieve complete disengagement.

Congress spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh had raised the issue of Chinese intrusions into Arunachal Pradesh and into Bhutan as well, which has a long standing military arrangement with India for the defence of its borders. Vallabh said that the confirmation of a Chinese village in Arunachal Pradesh, retreating from Finger 4 to Finger 3 of Pangong-Tso lake, the push back of Indian troops behind the Kailash ranges, and enemy troop presence until the Y Junction of Depsang plains [in Aksai Chin] signifies a clear threat from China which India is not responding to.
