Accused, Booked For Contractor’s Suicide, Karnataka Minister K.S. Eshwarappa Quits

Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayati Raj minister K.S. Eshwarappa is due to tender his resignation as a cabinet minister today after he was booked on Wednesday for abetting the suicide of Santosh Patil, a contractor to whom he “promised” renumeration for work undertaken but did not issue official work orders.

Eshwarappa had announced yesterday on Thursday that he will quit his post today on Friday: "Tomorrow I'm handing over the resignation letter to the Chief Minister. I thank you all for co-operation,” and added that he was resigning since "I decided to resign because I don't want to put in an uncomfortable situation those who helped me rise to this position, such as seniors in the party, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and our national leaders”.

Earlier, both Eshwarappa and CM Basavraj Bommai had ruled out his resignation, with Bommai saying that since it is a suicide case, “all aspects need to be investigated”. However, the allegations against Eshwarappa dented the BJP’s attempts to craft an ‘anti-corruption’ narrative since it often uses ‘corruption’ both as a rhetorical attack and also as an allegation against political opposition to send in Central investigative agencies.
