Birbhum Violence Case: Mamata Banerjee Visits Victims' Families, Promise 'Justice Soon'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited with the victims' families in Bogtui on Thursday and promised Rs 2 lakh compensation for the victims' burned-out homes.

In addition to the Rs 2 lakh compensation offered for house reconstruction, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that the government will pay Rs 5 lakhs to the victims' next of kin and Rs 50,000 apiece to those wounded.

Banerjee promised 10 families harmed by the violence work and promised to guarantee "soon justice."

Security was stepped up ahead of the CM's visit to the victim neighborhood, where eight people were killed on Tuesday, including women and children.

According to ANI, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was halted at Santiniketan in Birbhum soon before Banerjee arrived.

In the meantime, the Calcutta High Court has asked the West Bengal administration to provide a status report on the Birbhum violence by Thursday at 2 p.m.

On Tuesday, eight burned remains were discovered in a cluster of buildings in Bugtoi hamlet. The killing of a TMC-affiliated deputy gram pradhan, Bhadu Sheikh, is said to have started the violence.

A cluster of residences, including those of the suspects in Bhadu's murder, was allegedly assaulted and set on fire hours after the murder.

UPDATE: Anarul Sheikh, the Trinamool Rampurhat-1 block president, was detained from Tarapith on Thursday, shortly after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered his arrest.

She also slammed the cops, claiming that the "incident might have been prevented if the cops had arrived promptly." "The DIB (District Intelligence Bureau) and the IC (inspector in charge) failed to carry out their duties. "Those who intentionally failed to do their duties must face consequences," Banerjee added.
