Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’ Meets SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav In Lucknow

Chandrashekhar Azad ‘Ravan’, the lawyer-turned-activist from Saharanpur who rose to prominence as the founder of the collective known as ‘Bhim Army’ after the anti-Dalit violence in his area in 2016, has met Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow today, causing a flurry of speculation on whether he will join forces with the Samajwadi Party as yet another regional player to form a united front aimed at unseating the present BJP dispensation ruling in Uttar Pradesh.

Chandrashekhar Azad has been prominent in issues related to Dalits and ‘bahujans’ (an umbrella term meaning a united social body of Scheduled Castes, Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and minorities) and is the founder of the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) which was started in 2020.

Along with the ASP, the NCP is also planning to fight the elections in Uttar Pradesh in alliance with the Samajwadi Party. NCP leader and minister in the Maharashtra government, Nawab Malik, anonced yesterday on Thursday that: “We’ve decided to contest elections with Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. One seat has been announced and talks are on for other seats. We will support the alliance which is forming in UP”

The NCP has been seen in a public tussle with the BJP in a ‘proxy battle’ between Central agencies and the Maharashtra/Mumbai police in the past, most recently over the so-called ‘Aryan Khan drugs case’ whch ultimately resulted in a Narcotics Bureau officer Sameer Wankhede being removed from the agency after Nawab Malik persistently levelled charges of extortion and malpractice on him and his associates in the agency.
