Chhath Puja: Delhi Govt Deploys Boats To Clear Toxic Yamuna Foam

After images surfaced of devotees taking a dip amid the toxic foam of the Yamuna river for the 4-day Chhath festival, the Delhi government has now deployed 15 boats to clear it. The foam is caused by pollution in the river. A Delhi government official said that the decision was mad jointly by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Revenue Department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee.

The move comes ahead of the third day of the puja on the Sandhya Arghya, when devotees dip in the river and worship the sun. There have been various visuals in national and foreign media showing how devotees are risking their health by dipping into the poisonous foam caused by industrial discharge of detergents, ammonia, and phosphate

Meanwhile, Delhi Jal Board VC and  AAP leader Raghav Chaddha said that this was because of untreated wastewater being released into the river from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana and blamed the governments there for the situation.
