Red Alert For Tamil Nadu As Heavy Rains Expected For 2 Days; Measures Taken, Says Admin.

A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, leading a 2-day ‘red alert’ being issued for Tamil Nadu that has been reeling under seasonal rainfall and flooding. 20 districts of the state have been covered under this warning. The northern coast of the state is expected to be hit by the movement of this depressed area in the north- northwest direction. Heavy rainfall is also being forecast in Puducherry and Karaikal.

Speaking to NDTV, Chennai urban officials Gagandeep Singh Bedi and Ms G Sneha said that relief and mitigation processes were being set in place. Quote: “150 to 200 mm rainfall expected in Chennai. 507 motors are placed in traditional low-lying areas... 60 heavy duty pumps are ready too. Measures to distribute food, generator sets (for electricity supply) and meet other infrastructure needs are also ready. 53 boats have been deployed”.

Until now, Tamil Nadu has received an excess rainfall of 46% above the historical average. This spell of rain was heavier than the devastating Chennai floods of 2015. CM MK Stalin visited flood-hit areas and participated in food distribution efforts.

Boats, Connectivity, Food Packets Prioritized

53 boats have been deployed for rescue work. 434 ‘siren towers’ for warning and 50 ‘mobile towers’ on wheels for maintaining cellular connectivity have been readied. Free food will be distributed at ‘Amma Canteens’ and by the Chennai Corporation.
