Immediately after taking oath as the new chief minister of Punjab, Charanjit Singh Channi held a press conference in which he said that “Congress is in the DNA of my blood”. Fromer Chief Minister Amarinder Singh did not attend the ceremony, which is being seen as a major sign of his rift with the party. Addressing reporters at Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh, he said that his family has a deep history with the Congress. "Congress is in the DNA of my blood".
He said that this is the government of the common man (‘aam aadmi’), a phrase that the Congress has used electorally earlier as well. He announced that electricity will be restored to farmers who had their connections cut due to non-payment. He also announced waivers for electricity and water bills.
On the issue of farm laws, he said that he will “present [my] neck” if farmers’ interests are threatened in any way. He thanked the Congress leadership for elevating him since he comes from a poor and Dalit community. All issues as decided by the party’s high command will be resolved and worked upon, he said. He added that the sand mafia will not find any place in the state.
