Charanjit Singh Channi has bexome the new Chief Minister of Punjab replacing Captain Amarinder Singh. He is the state's first Dalit CM. He was elected from Chamkaur Sahib Assembly seat. Punjab has the highest proportion of Dalits per state in India. He was apointed a day after the previous CM Capt. Amarinder Singh stepeddown ahead of the Congres high command meet to resolve the crisis between him and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. Sidhi has supported the move, tweeting: “Historic !! Punjab’s first Dalit CM-Designate … Will be written with Golden letters in History. A tribute to the spirit of the Constitution and the Congress !!”
Charanjit Singh Channi was quoted yesterday by ANI as saying: “We have presented our stance, unanimously supported by party MLAs, before the Governor. Oath-taking ceremony will be held at 11 am tomorrow".
