COVID-19: 1.79 Lakh New Cases Incl. 4,033 Omicron Cases, 12.5% Increase In 24 Hrs

Amid the ongoing third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, the Health Ministry has released figures today morning that show a 12.5% increase in COVID-19 cases in the country with 1.79 lakh cases, including 4,033 cases of the Omicron variant. There have been 146 deaths reported as well, with the national recovery rate going down to 96.62%. The number of first dose and fully vaccinated people, respectively, are 880 crore and 627 crore, representing 63.8% and 45.4% of the eligible population respectively.

Poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, which is the largest state in the country by population, has seen an increase of 1300% in cases. Maharashtra and Delhi continue to remain worst affected with 44,388 and 22,751 new cases respectively.

 IIT Kanpur Mathematics and Computer Science professor Manindra Agarwal has said on Twitter that the third wave of the pandemic will peak this month in Mumbai and Delhi which are currently two major hotspots of the coronavirus. Media outlets are reporting that Delhi and Mumbai may see a peak within a week’s time, with weekly cases reaching 50-60,000 in the national capital and 30,000 in the financial hub of the country.
