Yogi Adityanath’s Controversial Statement: Says ‘80 vs 20 Fight’ In UP Elections

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has made controversial comments ahead of the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh, whose first phase is due to begin from 10th February along with Assembly elections in 5 other states.

In an interview during a conclave organized by the state broadcaster DD (Doordarshan) in Lucknow, the state’s capital, Ygi Adityanath described the voting behavior of constituents of the state as based on support either for “good governance and development” or “goons and mafias” .

It was seen as an implicit religious polarization attempt because the host had earlier remarked that Asaddudin Owaisi chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM),says “it is 19%”, referring to the population of Muslims.

Adityanath then interrupted him and phrased the meaning of “80 vs. 20” in the terms above. He had also come under fire for using the term ‘people who use abba jaan’ as a thinly-veiled taunt to Muslims.

The BJP has been seen to ramp up its Hindutva rhetoric and optics ahead of elections in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ‘praying’ at Kedarnath and Yogi Adityanath visiting the site of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya for interviews.
