Owing to the huge user base of Whatsapp, the Facebook-owned messaging app has finalized an arrangement with the Ministry of Health and MyGov that allows Indians to book their coronavirus vaccine slots through the app. Previously vaccinated people can also download their certificates through the platfor. The need for increased coverage has been urgent since the second wave of the pandemic wreaked havoc on lives and livelihoods. According to data the double-dose coverage is less than 15% of the eligible population. The issues commonly faced have been lack of access and understanding, and availability of slots.
Abhishek Singh, CEO MyGov; President & CEO NeGD; MD & CEO Digital India Corporation (DIC) at Govt of India said the following: “MyGov Corona Helpdesk is now also aiding in the process of vaccine booking as also finding vaccination centres and slots and downloading vaccination certificates. It is enabling digital inclusion in the true sense as most people find the AI-based interface enabled on WhatsApp easier to navigate. We are thankful to WhatsApp for their continued support in helping us unlock the true potential of this chatbot for citizen help and engagement throughout the trying times of the pandemic,"
