Danny Fenster Case: American Journalist Jailed For 11 Yrs. In Myanmar

American journalist Dany Fenster has been sentenced to 11 yers in prison by Myanmar military authorities. Fenster, a Managing Editor in a magazine Frontier, had been detained in May at Yangon airport and subsequently charged with various offenses ranging from contact with “unlawful associations”, “sedition”, “terrorism”, breaching immigration laws, and “incitement”.

The 37-year old Fenster has been convicted on three charges under three separate acts: The Unlawful Assocation Act, Immigration Act, And the Penal Code.  His employer, Frontier Magazine, posted to Facebook saying that the sentencing was the “harshest possible under the law” and said that the court unfairly disregarded cler evidence that he had stopped working for the banned media outlet Myanmar Now for over 9 months at the time of his arrest.

The trial itself was held in Yangon’s Insein prison, closed to the public and media, and the conviction was announced on Friday. The magazine said that “everyone at frontier is disappointed and frustrated at this decision. We just want to see Danny released as soon as possible so he can go home to his family”
