The police has been consistently denying the charges and saying that Altaaf committed suicide. However, During an interview with a TV channel, the mother of the deceased said that she refuses to believe that her son committed suicide and is demanding a CBI probe into the matter. Altaaf’s death in police custody was notified on Monday evening.
Altaaf was brought to the police station for ‘questioning’ after allegedly having ‘kidnapped’ a 16-year old Hindu girl. The police maintains that he hung himself from a tap’s pipe in the washroom of the lock up using the string of his jacket’s hoodie. This narrative is being questioned on the grounds that Altaaf could not have hung himself from the tap when it was only 2.5 feet off the ground.
The Opposition has come into action over this incident. Yesterday, a Congress party delegation led by Salman Khurshid visited the family of the deceased and it is reported that a similar delegation by the Samajwadi Party will also reach Altaaf’s parents’ house.
