Dozens Of Al-Jazeera Journalists' iPhones Hacked With Pegasus Spyware: Citizen Lab

Dozens of Al-Jazeera journalists had their iPhones quietly compromised with Israel-based NSO's 'zero-click' spyware, say researchers at Citizen Lab, the internet watchdog at the University of Toronto.

London-based reporter Rania Dridi and at least 36 journalists, producers, and executives working for the Al Jazeera news agency were hit with a so-called “zero-click” attack that took advantage of a now-fixed vulnerability in Apple’s iMessage. The attack secretly compromised the devices without tricking the user to open a malicious link.

In a technical report on Sunday, the researchers say they believe the journalists’ iPhones were infected with the Pegasus spyware, developed by Israel-based NSO Group.

Details from one of the spyware-infected phone show that the spyware was able to secretly record the microphone and phone calls, take photos without permission, gather the victim’s passwords, and track the phone’s location.
