Farm Bills: Farmers Protest Rock Punjab, Haryana & UP; Several Highways Leading To Delhi Blocked

Over 265 farmers' groups affiliated with the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) took part in protests on Friday against the Central Government’s contentious farm Bills.

Massive protests witnessed in parts of Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh as farmers blocked roads and highways leading to the national capital Delhi and took out rallies and marches in a nationwide agitation. Farmers in West Bengal also held protests at several places.

Apart from 265 outfits, Avik Saha, the AIKSCC General Secretary, said, “around 100 non-affiliated groups also participated and protests were held at around 20,000 spots nationwide."

All India Kisan Sabha General Secretary Hannan Mollah said, "Just as British made Indian farmers slaves for Indigo farming, this will make all Indian farmers slaves of corporate. Indian agriculture is farmer-based, but govt wants to make it corporate based. Our demand is that MSP should be there, govt should buy at MSP and anyone buying below MSP should be sent to jail."

Farmers said the protests will intensify unless the Bills are repealed, with many Opposition parties like the Congress, the RJD and the TMC, along with 10 central trade unions, voicing their support for the farmers.
