Human rights have not been a topic of discussion during the India-US 2+2 ministerial meeting this week, according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. India, he added, will not keep silent if this unfolds.
S Jaishankar expressed his thoughts as follows: "No, we did not discuss human rights at this discussion. The gathering mostly dealt with politico-military issues."
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US was following certain recent "incidents" in India, including increasing human rights abuses by some government, police, and prison employees, at a joint press conference on Monday.
After the 2+2 meetings, Blinken, Jaishankar, Singh, and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin addressed the joint conference.
In response to a question, Jaishankar stated that while the matter of human rights was not covered at the present meeting, it had been raised previously.
"It's a subject that's come up before. When Secretary Blinken visited India, it came up. If you recall the press conference that followed, I was extremely forthright about the fact that we had addressed it and that I had said what I had to say.
"So let me explain it to you this way," he added, "so that everyone understands where we stand on this.
