India Pledges $200,000 For Volcano Affected Kingdom Of Tonga, Expresses

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said today that India is extending a $200,000 assistance to the Kingdom of Tomnga, an island nation in the region of Oceania. Its statement expresses “deep sympathy” on behalf of India for the losses and damages faced by its people due to a volcanic eruption on an inhabited island which is a part of the archipelago country of 1 lakh people. Experts believe that it is the largest volcanic eruption in 30 years. 

“India extends deep sympathy to the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga for the damage and destruction caused by this unprecedented disaster.” The statement reads. The amount disbursed will be utilized towards “relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in the Kingdom of Tonga.”, it says.

“India has firmly stood by Tonga during times of crisis and devastation caused by natural disasters, as during Cyclone Gita in 2018. Disaster Risk Reduction and Management is an important pillar of India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative (IPOI) announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2019” said the MEA statement,

India and Tonga, along with Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) which is a multinational collective of 14 island nations.
