MP: Muslim Man Beaten For Traveling With Hindu Woman Charged With Violating Anti-Conversion Law

Ten days after being assaulted for travelling on a train with a Hindu woman in Ujjain, a 26-year-old Muslim man was charged under Madhya Pradesh's anti-conversation ordinance on Monday.

Asif Sheikh, an Indore resident, was charged with extortion and reportedly forcing the 25-year-old woman from Mhow to marry him, according to Arun Solanki, a local police officer. Sheikh was arrested, after the woman filed a complaint.

According to the woman's complaint, Sheikh, a friend of her husband's, would frequently visit her home and had taken "objectionable images" of her a few months ago. She said Sheikh had threatened to discredit her and was extorting money from her. He allegedly began pressuring to convert for marriage recently, according to Solanki.

She claimed she was under threat and was only doing what he told her to do. When several individuals intervened, the accused was "forcibly transporting her to Ajmer." According to the woman, she was terrified and did not submit a report in Ujjain.

Police said they were attempting to apprehend the culprit, who was taken from a train and thrashed at the Ujjain railway station on January 14 for allegedly misguiding the married mother of a kid.

Interfaith couples have been targeted by vigilante groups, and anti-conversion legislation was passed following a campaign against "love jihad," a term used by Hindu organisations to describe relations between Muslim men and Hindu women. The organisations think that "love jihad" is a coordinated effort by Muslim men to seduce Hindu women into marriage.
