Israel Govt Collapses After Netanyahu Fails To Pass Budget, Triggering 4th Election In Two Years

In Israel, the 7-month-old coalition government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has collapsed, deepening the political crisis in the country. Israel will now hold elections in March for the fourth time in a span of two years.

Israel's longest-serving PM Netanyahu was supposed to pass the Budget 2020 by Tuesday night, failing which the Israeli Parliament has been dissolved.

The coalition government led by Netanyahu and his former election opponent, Defence Minister Benny Gantz, had been inching towards collapse for weeks, undermined by mutual hostility and mistrust.

At the beginning of December, a proposal was made to dissolve the Parliament, which had 61 votes in its favour.
