The United States’ top military commander, Gen. Frank McKenzie, briefed reporters regarding the investigation into the August 29 drone strike that reportedly killed 10 civilians, including 7 children. The drone strike was purportedly aimed against ISIS-K terrorists that perpetrated asuicide bombing at the Hamid Karzai International Airport, Kabul.
Admitting that the strike was a “mistake”, he said that it was "unlikely that the vehicle and those who died in the drone strike were associated with ISIS-K or were a direct threat to US forces". However, he also said that the strike was prompted by intelligence of a subsequent attack, and based on the ground situation in Kabul in context of the troop withdrawal and civilian evacuations.
