Maharashtra: Jolt To BJP As Party Loses 5 Out Of 6 MLC Seats

The BJP has suffered a setback in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections as the party won only one of the 6 seats of the Legislative Council. Four seats were won by the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi while one seat was won by Independent. Though the Shiv Sena, which is heading the ruling coalition, could not win a single seat, the NCP and Congress won two seats each.

BJP leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the results did not go as expected, he expected better. He said, "We could not judge the combined strength of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress in these polls. Now we know how big fight they can put up together. We will prepare better for the next polls."

BJP has won this on Dhule-Nanderbar seat. The by-elections were held on this seat after Congress MLC Ambarish Patel joined the BJP.

The elections were held on December 1 after the retirement of BJP's Chandrakant Patil, NCP's Satish Chavan and BJP's Anil Sole and two independent MLCs from the constituencies of Dattatreya Sawant and Srikanth Deshpande.

It is a matter of fact that the BJP has also lost the Nagpur graduate seat, which is considered to be the stronghold of the party. The region has also been represented by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Gangadhar Rao Fadnavis, father of Devendra Fadnavis. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari won the BJP five times from this seat. However, now this seat of the Legislative Council has gone into the court of Congress. At the same time, Congress has also won in Amravati, the stronghold of BJP.

Apart from this, BJP also lost on the graduate seats of Pune and Aurangabad. Whereas former state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and BJP President Chandrakant Patil also held public meetings here. The NCP has won a big win in both these seats. Nawab Malik, a minister and NCP leader in the Maharashtra government, said that the 'election results show that Mahavikas Aghadi and NCP have worked for the public and the BJP needs to understand the truth.
