Maharashtra Restricts Loudspeaker Use At Religous Sites To Prevent Tensions, Violence

After a ‘controversy’ was created by Mahashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray over playing ‘azaan’ over loudspeakers in Mumbai, to which he said his organization and ‘Hindus’ will respond by playing Hanuman Chalisa, th Maharashtra government has imposed restrictions on the use of loudspeakers and such places will have to seek prior approval from the government. Guidelines on their use will be issued in the next one or two days.

Raj Thackeray had called on ‘Hindu brothers’ to “be prepared” if mosques did not remove their loudspeakers by May 3rd.  State home minister Dilip Walse Patil saud to ANI that he has met with the Director-General of Police, through whom the government’s decision will be relayed to commissioners and officers. He will also meet with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, saying afterwards, as per ANI, who quoted him as saying: "We have kept an eye on the law and order situation in the state. Strict action will be taken against those who attempt to disturb peace in the state”.

Deepak Pandey, Commissioner of Police, Nashik, said that Hanuman Chalisa will not be allowed to be played 15 minutes before or after the call for prayer or ‘azaan’. He also added, “It will not be allowed within 100 metres of the mosque. The aim of this order is to maintain law and order”.
