Mumbai Airport Asks Air India To Vacate Mumbai Land Including 4 Staff Colonies With 1,600 Families

Mumbai Airpot has asked Air India to vacate land that includes 4 staff colonies housing 1,600 families. In October 2021, Air India employees were asked to vacate company accommodation within six months of the announcement of divestment. This led to protests by labour unions and the matter is presently pending before the Chief Labour Comissioner (Central).

The Tata Sons-owned airline was told by the Adani-group controlled Mumbai Airport to surrender land that is not part of its “core” operations.

Air India was served a notice by Mumbai International Airport Authority (MIAL) on March 11th to review its use of airport land, deal with former ground handling and engineering subsidiaries on an arms’ length (independent, unrelated) basis and surrender the excess land, with a 45-day window for compliance. Air India owns 750,000 square meters of land in Kalina and Sahar, as per the notice by MIAL.

The land held by Air India includes offices, hangars, cargo warehouses, ramp operation office, housing colonies, sports club and also developed and vacant land.

The issue has also attracted political attention with the Shiv Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar pledging support for Air India employees and expressing willingness to protest against Adani if need be, and former NCP MLC Vidya Chavan calling for the intervention of the Maharashtra government.
