Rogue BJD MLA Rams Car Into Crowd, Injures 22, Gets Thrashed by Crowd

Prasanta Kumar Jagadev, an MLA of the ruling BJD in Odisha, rammed his car into a crowd in the town of Banapur in Khorda district of the state, injuring 22 people including 10 policemen, and a journalist. He was then assaulted by the irate crowd provoked by his actions. His car was also overturned by the crowd.

Jagadev was first admitted in a hospital in Tangi before being shifted to Bhubhaneshwar. The SP of Khurda, Alekh Chandra Pahi, has stated that the situation is under control now. It is alleged that the MLA drive his car into a crowd when BJP supported Panchayat Samiti members entered the panchayat block office for election campaigning. It is alleged that the lawmaker was inebriated.

He has been suspended from the party by party chief Naveen Patnaik before this incident too, and has been in the spotlight for violent and inappropriate behaviour. In September 2021, he was caught on video thrashing a BJP leader from his Chilika constituency. In August 2020, a junior engineer alleged misbehaviour and filed a police complaint. In 2016, he was accused of assaulting a lady Tehsildar.

This incident comes months after the infamous Lakhimpur Kheri incident in Uttar Pradesh in November 2021 which saw four farmers being run over and four other deaths in the ensuing violence.
