Randeep Surjewala Says 'Emperor Is Afraid' After MLA Jignesh Mevani Arrested For Modi Tweet

After today’s early morning arrest of Vadgam, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, who supports the Congress as an independent in the Assembly, the Congress issued a statement through spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, who said to media that the “emperor is afraid”, making a veiled reference to Narendra Modi.

Mevani was picked up by Assam Police from Gujarat, on the basis that his tweet that Modi considers Godse (the killer of M.K. Gandhi) as a ‘god’ can potentially create religious enmity and disturb law and order. Various sections of the IPC such as 153(A), 295(A), 504, 506, and other provisions of the IT Act.

He termed the development as “unfortunate” for the Constitution and for freedom of expression. He also referred to recent police cases against Alka Lamba and Kumar Vishwas for ‘asking questions’.

“The arrest of our friend [and] colleague Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, by [the] police of Assam… just for a single tweet, asking the Prime Minister to appeal for communal amity and brotherhood in Gujarat reflects the deep-rooted prejudice and the fear among those sitting in the citadels of power in Delhi today. Does the Prime Minister and the Bharitya Janata Party think that they can browbeat Jignesh Mevani and every voice… rising for communal amity…?”

He said further: “Do they think they can trample on the Constituion and murder the rule of law in broad daylight?”

He said that even if he, Rahul Gandhi, and the rest of the Congress leadership, along with those that believe in communal harmony, are thrown behind bars, the “civilizational values” of India will not be defeated.
