Russia, China Push For UN Sanctions Relief For DPRK (North Korea)

Russia and China, permanent members of the UN Security Council, have crafted a new draft resolution as reported by the news agency Reuters which calls for lifting sanctions on the country’s exports of statues, seafood and textiles and reduce the cap on its imports of refined petroleum. The resolution is being drafted “with the intent of enhancing the livelihood of the civilian population” of the reclusive Asian country.

But China and Russia have not scheduled any talks on the new resolution similar to a previous move in 2019, although that draft resolution “remains on the table” as said by China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun last month.

The sanctions were imposed in 2006 after the DPRK’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The new draft resolution aimsto make the UNSC acknowledge “the difficult situation of economy and livelihood of the DPRK in recent years, underscoring the necessity to respect the legitimate security concerns of the DPRK, and ensure the welfare, inherent dignity, and rights of people in the DPRK”.
