COP 26: 105 Countries Pledge $12 Billion, Pledge To Reverse Forest Loss By 2030

The leaders of 105 countries have adopted the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration On Forests and Land Use which has a six-point agenda, prominent of which is to “significantly increase finance and investment from a wide variety of public and private sources” towards forest conservation and restoration efforts.

In the declaration presented by the host Prime Minister of Britain on behalf of the signatories, it is stated that the leaders “commit to working collectively to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030 while delivering sustainable development and promoting an inclusive rural transformation”.

It also urged leaders “to join forces in a sustainable land use transition”. Over the next 5 years, $12 billion in public funds have been pledged to ameliorate and halt forest loss. UK PM Boris Johnson said: "With today's unprecedented pledges, we will have a chance to end humanity's long history as nature's conqueror, and instead become its custodian."

The World Wildlife Federation (WWF) welcomed the announcement as well. “Forests provide ecosystem services that are critical to human, economic and social well-being, yet they continue to disappear at alarming rates. The commitment by over 100 world leaders to halt and reverse deforestation and land degradation by 2030 is welcome in that it acknowledges the important value of forests and other natural ecosystems…” said Fran Price, Lead, WWF Global Forest Practice.
