Facebook Discontinues Facial Recognition Feature After Concerns On Misuse

Social media platform Facebook, now owned by the rebranded Meta Platforms, said that it is discontinuing its facial recognition feature. “There are many concerns about the place of facial recognition technology in society, and regulators are still in the process of providing a clear set of rules governing its use,” he added.

“Amid this ongoing uncertainty, we believe that limiting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of use cases is appropriate” said Meta Platform’s vice president of artificial intelligence, Jerome Pesenti, wrote in a blog post.

Concerns had been raised about the misrecognition and racial bias of the algorithms that drive the technology. This comes after the recent controversies over Facebook’s practices and policies following revelations by Facebook employee Frances Haughen and its rebranding itself as a virtual-reality development platform.
