UAPA Notice Against Two Lawyers For Report On Tripura Violence

The Tripura police has given a notice to two lawyers who went on a fact-finding and legal assistance mission to the violence hit state. Mukesh, and Ansar Indori, practicing at the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court respectively, released a report in the press Club of India on Tuesday in which they named VHP, Bajrang Dal, and Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM) as the main perpetrators.

The mission was conducted on behalf of PUCL (People’s Union for Civil Liberties). Mukesh is associated with PUCL and Indori with National Confederation of Human Rights Organizations (NCHRO). Their report had stated that the state government was deliberately not taking due action, which is “tantamount to sponsoring the violence”.

There are various reports of widespread anti-Muslim violence in the state targeting mosques and shops owned by the minority. It began on October 26th during a VHP rally in Panisagar town. The rally was held to protest violence against Hindus in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Charges Against Lawyers

The two lawyers have been charged under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153B, 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation), 471, 503 (criminal intimidation), 504, 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, and Section 13 of the UAPA, dealing with abetting unlawful activities.
