SC Accepts Centre's Plea, Dismisses Lawsuits Concerning Students Evacuation From Ukraine

The Supreme Court dismissed two cases on Monday after the Centre announced that it had finished the "colossal task" of evacuating 22,500 stuck Indian students from Ukraine's war zone.

A panel of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Krishna Murari took note of Attorney General K K Venugopal's representations that the Centre, in addition to sending stranded students home, is also looking into representation on their studies being harmed by the ongoing war.

"Now that the students have returned, nothing remains in this subject," the bench observed at the opening.

The question of the continuance of studies of persons rescued from the war-torn nation was highlighted by lawyer Vishal Tiwari, who filed a PIL on his own behalf.

"The government has done a wonderful job in bringing back 22,500 students." Venugopal stated, "The government is looking at the representation (of students) and the government would look into it." "Let the government decide," replied the chief law officer.

The bench took the attorney general's submissions into consideration and decided to dismiss the cases.

The Supreme Court heard arguments on March 4 that the government had already evacuated 17,000 stranded Indian students from Ukraine.
