SC Denies Interim Bail To SP Leader Azam Khan

The Supreme Court denied interim bail to Azam Khan, Samajwadi Party’s leader, who is running in the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

"How can you file 32 petitions to seek bail?" a panel of Justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai asked Khan, directing him to attend the concerned court and request a speedy disposition of his bail applications. Keep politics out of the courtroom."

"I am inside prison for nothing," Khan responded. My lord, where do I go? "I'm not bringing politics into it," Khan's lawyer, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, told the court. Khan is the subject of 87 FIRs, and he has been granted bail in 84 of them. Despite numerous requests for a hearing, the bail plea has not been taken up in the last 3-4 months, according to the lawyer.

Azam Khan has been personally named by Amit Shah in election campaigns as a veiled reference to law and order situation, and a dog-whistle against Muslims according to many critics.

While Azam Khan is running for the SP in Rampur, his son Abdullah is contesting for the SP in Rampur district's Suar seat.
